To promote the use of our film in the classroom and beyond, here are some educational materials to download:
One Pager: One (double-sided) sheet giving an overview of who Sally Gearhart was and briefly outlining some of the key topics (such as “Inspire Activism”) that will be explored in more depth in the Modules.
Discussion Guide: A guide of 20+ pages that includes pre-screening and post-screening questions organized around topics such as LGBTQ+ Rights, Feminism, and more. A timeline places Sally in historical context, and a resources section lists relevant books, articles, and films.
Modules: These modules explore four key themes, providing film clips for students to review, questions relevant to that theme, and one or more exercises related to the topic at hand.
Module ONE – Inspire Activism: This module explores what made Sally such a powerful and effective activist and asks whether she conveys lessons that might be applicable in today’s renewed struggles for queer and women’s rights.
Module TWO – Correct the Omission of Women from History: Women have too often been written out of history, including Sally. This module examines why Sally’s story was sometimes left out of the narrative, and what we can do to include underrepresented voices, painting a fuller and more accurate picture of the past.
Module THREE – Reaching Across Divides: Although Sally’s views could be extreme, she was usually willing to change her mind and always eager to connect with people from different backgrounds and with divergent viewpoints. This module considers how beneficial it can be to “reach across the aisle” and communicate with those with different outlooks.
Module FOUR – Teach and Tell Feminist History: Finally, this module looks at the invaluable importance of Women Studies programs not just in teaching about women (radical at the time!) but in promoting community engagement and activism.
